Cardboard Knitting Loom |
Knitting looms are becoming more and more popular. I had no idea they existed, but as soon as I found out about them and the things that I could do with them, I started to watch video tutorials that explained their use. The more I watched those videos, the more I wanted to try it too. The problem is that I couldn't find one here. After thinking about it for some time, I had the idea of creating a knitting loom by myself. The shape didn't look hard to do after all. I decided that I could make one using cardboard and paper. It's very simple to do and doesn't take long at all! Here is the result. |
Materials and Tools:
- cardboard
- newspaper pages
- hot glue
- cutter
- compass
- long needle
- white glue or stick glue
Step 1Draw a circle on a piece of cardboard using a compass. The circle must have a diameter of 28cm (11 inches).
Draw a smaller circle inside the first one. This circle's diameter needs to be 24cm long (9.44 inches). Now cut out the cardboard around the circles and the disc inside the circles using a cutter. You'll obtain a round frame this way. |
Step 2Place your long needle on one of the short sides of a newspaper's page. The needle needs to be close to the angle of the page, and not too parallel to edge.
Start to roll the page around the needle keeping the paper as tight as possible. Keep rolling it until you reach the other end of the page and secure it with glue. You need about 2 or 3 rolls like this one to make the loom's pegs. |
Step 3Cut the rolls in many smaller pieces. They need to be as equal as possible so you can use a ruler to measure them. Make them about 2/3cm long (1.18 inches). These will be the pegs.
You need a total of 41 pegs. Glue your pegs all around the round frame at about 1cm (0.39 inches) from each other. Use hot glue to do this. Make sure that all of your pegs are steady on the cardboard and try it! You can even create a long rectangular loom instead. What do you think about making a hat with your new loom? I did! |
