Spiral Lamp |
One day I was looking at all the things that were in my basement and found a bag full of wooden dowels. They were so many that I thought I HAD to make something out of them. So I started to play around with them and created one the most basic shapes: a square. One square after the other I finally came up with the spiral structure. I couldn't believe that such a particular shape was so easy to create. I decided to try and put light inside to see what the light effect was. As soon as I saw it I was amazed! So this is how this lamp was born. If you are looking for something that will make your house special, then you must try this project. You'll be so proud of yourself! |
Materials and Tools:
- 124 wooden dowels - I used these.
- hot glue/white glue
- piece of cardboard
- ruler
- pencil
- cutter
- light bulb* and bulb holder
Step 1The squares that you need to compose the lamp are made by gluing together 2 dowels in a L shape, and then again, other 2 dowels exactly like that. Finally glue all the 4 dowels together to form a square, as you can see on the photos.
Hot glue works better and faster for this step. You need to make a total of 31 equal squares. |
Step 2Take 2 squares and place them one above the other, twisting the second one a little so that their angles don't touch each other. The squares must always have the same side facing to look identical. Put some glue where the squares intersect to secure them.
Now glue another square on top of them, always twisting it on the same side that you chose for the previous one and keep adding squares one above the other until you have glued a total of 28 squares. Their rotation will create the spiral effect. |
Step 3Cut a square out of cardboard. It needs to be about 2mm (0.03 inches) smaller than the wooden squares.
Place your bulb holder in the middle of the cardboard and trace its round outline. Finally, cut out the circle. This is the hole where your bulb holder will pass through when the lamp is done. |
Now you need to create the base of the lamp.
Take the remaining squares (they are 3) and glue them one above the other, alternating the way they are turned. DON'T twist them this time! Glue the cardboard square on top of them, and finally, glue the spiral structure that you created previously. It's time to install the bulb holder and light bulb in the lamp and light it up... Enjoy! |
