Italian-Style Hot Chocolate
|
The Italian hot chocolate is creamy and thicker than the regular one. I grew up drinking this kind of chocolate, and I always thought that this was the regular hot chocolate known all over the world. I was very surprised when I found out that it wasn't. I know that many of you are thinking that this looks like pudding, but believe me, this is not pudding and definitely not as thick. This is a drink and its consistency depends on how long you cook it. The ingredients are the ones you already know for hot chocolate, except for a secret one that makes it creamy. It's so fast and easy to make that you must try it. I'm sure you'll fall in love with it! |
Ingredients (for 1 cup of hot chocolate):
- 2 tsp of cocoa powder
- 2 tsp of sugar*
- 1 tsp of potato starch (or corn starch)
- 125ml (1/2) of milk
*Note: 2 tsp of sugar were enough for me, but you can add more if you prefer.
Step 1Put 2 teaspoons of cocoa in a small container, add the sugar and the potato starch.
Mix everything together. This powder is the base of your hot chocolate. The potato (or corn) starch is the secret ingredient that will make your hot chocolate thicker. |
Step 2Add a little bit of milk and mix it with the powder to remove all lumps.
You will obtain a chocolate cream this way. When the cream is finally smooth, add the rest of the milk and keep mixing everything with a spoon. |
Step 3Put the container with the chocolate on the stove, keeping a low/medium flame.
Mix it and never stop mixing! This way the chocolate won't stick and form lumps. After a few minutes the liquid will become darker. This means that it's hot enough for the starch to thicken the chocolate. When this happens the chocolate is ready and you can remove it from the stove. This way your chocolate will be creamy, but not too thick and still liquid enough. You can leave it on the stove a little longer if you want it thicker, but be careful because it takes just a few seconds for it to thicken even more. This happens because the liquid is so hot that it keeps cooking by itself even if you remove it from the stove. That's why it's better if you turn it off immediately. |
Enjoy your Italian hot chocolate!
