Skyscraper Lamp |
Wooden dowels are something I started to love since the day I began to play with them. Because of their simple and regular shape, it's possible to create many different combinations with them, and even the easiest geometry becomes a spectacular piece of art thanks to the power of light. So, this is what I used to create this lamp. It's so easy that I expect you to make it in a day too! Have fun! |
Materials and Tools:
- 124 wooden dowels - I used these.
- hot glue/white glue
- piece of cardboard
- pencil
- cutter
- light bulb* and bulb holder
Step 1The lamp is composed by squares made with dowels.
Here is how to make the squares: glue 2 dowels together in a L shape and do the same with other 2 dowels. These 4 dowels will be the sides of the square, so join the 2 pieces together with hot glue or white glue. Keep creating other squares like this one, for a total of 31. |
Step 2Cut a cardboard square that is a couple of millimeters (0.03 inches) smaller than the dowels square.
Take your bulb holder and draw its round outline in the middle of the cardboard square and cut it out. This is the hole where the bulb holder will pass through when the lamp is done. |
Step 3Glue 3 dowels squares one above the other, alternating the way they are turned. This way the middle square will be turned on the other side.
You can use either hot glue or white glue. Remember: hot glue dries much faster, but white glue is more resistant on wood. Finally, glue the cardboard square on top of them. The base of the lamp is done! |
Step 4Glue a new wooden square on the cardboard, making sure that it's not on the same side as the previous one.
Now glue another square on top: its angles must be placed where the sides of the previous square are and viceversa. This way the tips of the lamp will be 8 instead of 4. Keep gluing squares one above the other alternating the way they are placed. Make sure that all of the next ones are placed just like the first 2 squares. |
